PDF accessibility with AI: audit, remediate and document
Accessful makes your PDFs accessible automatically. Its AI adds tags, establishes the correct reading order and generates alt text in line with PDF/UA-2, WCAG 2.2 and EN 301 549 – typically in seconds, with an audit-ready report for every document.
AI understands your document – not just its code
Rule-based tools reach their limits as soon as a document requires interpretation: multi-column layouts, diagrams, info boxes. Accessful takes a different approach. The AI captures text, layout and image content in context - just like a human reads the document.
This understanding creates precise alt text, a correct reading order even for complex pages and a clean tag structure. The AI reliably detects typical barriers; Anything that cannot be automatically and conclusively checked is clearly shown in the audit report.
-
Text
Headings, paragraphs, footnotes and their connections - in over 110 languages.
-
Layout
Columns, tables and text boxes are understood as a structure - the reading order follows the flow of the content.
-
Image content
Images, graphics and diagrams are interpreted in the context of the document - this creates precise alt text.
What Accessful remediates in your PDFs
Accessful adds the complete structural level that makes a PDF accessible - automatically and uniformly across all documents.
-
Tags & document structure
Paragraphs, lists, tables and other elements receive correct PDF tags - the basis for screen readers to be able to read the document.
-
Reading order
Content is placed in the correct order - even with multi-column layouts, info boxes and complex pages.
-
Alt text
Images, graphics and diagrams receive precise descriptions that reflect the visual context - automatically formulated by the AI.
-
Tables & lists
Headers, cell references and list levels are marked semantically correctly so that screen readers can read tables clearly.
-
Heading hierarchy
Headings are tagged as H1 to H6 in a coherent hierarchy - for navigation and orientation in the document.
-
Metadata & document titles
Document title, document language and other metadata are set - mandatory information for an accessible PDF according to PDF/UA.
Make PDFs accessible – without specialist knowledge, without training
Open the web app in the browser, drag and drop your PDFs, and track the live status of each document in the dashboard. The PDF/UA expertise is in the AI – your team needs neither previous knowledge nor training.
There's nothing to install and nothing to configure: Accessful works out of the box.
- Drag and drop for individual files and entire batches
- Live status per document in the dashboard
- No PDF/UA expertise, no training required
- Ready to use straight away – no installation required
The layout remains unchanged
Accessful does not change the appearance or content of your documents. Only the structural level is corrected: tags, reading order, alt text and metadata. After the correction, your PDF will look the same as before - but will be accessible to screen reader users.
Note on digitally signed documents: A digital signature always refers to the exact status of a file. After every change - including additions to the structural level - the signature must be reapplied. It is best to correct documents before signing or re-sign the remediated PDF.
From a single PDF to the entire document inventory
Accessful processes all common document types – from marketing brochures and reports to contracts and forms – and understands content in over 110 languages. Batch processing handles thousands of documents in one go.
For automation, you connect Accessful directly to your systems via the REST API. Organizations with special requirements operate the solution on-premises in their own infrastructure - air-gapped if desired, with their own AI models.
-
Over 110 languages
From German and English to rarely spoken languages.
-
Thousands of documents per run
Batch processing via web app or API – with status reporting for each document.
-
Web app, API or on-premises
The operating route adapts to your requirements – not the other way around.
Audit-ready report for every document
Accessful creates an audit-ready report for every remediated PDF. It documents checks and corrections in accordance with PDF/UA-2, WCAG 2.2 and EN 301 549 - and serves as evidence for internal and external auditors, for example for requirements from the BFSG and the European Accessibility Act (EAA).
What cannot be automatically and conclusively checked is clearly shown in the protocol. This means you always know where your document inventory is – and can provide evidence of it.
Remediation guarantee
If a document remediated by Accessful is not recognized as accessible during an accessibility audit, we will remediate it free of charge - quickly, easily and at no additional cost.
